Why to Contribute

To our Digital Community Memory

Dear Venetians and Venitian lovers,we all remember the night of high water on November 12 and 13, 2019.A dark night in which Venice saw her fragility and we with her. It is fundamental to recall, recount and pass on those hours in which we remembered the delicate balance of the lagoon and the community that lives of the community that inhabits it.

In order to preserve and enhance the memories of the inhabitants and visitors of Venice in relation to extreme natural events that occurred in the lagoon, the AquaGranda Digital Archive was created. It is a participatory project that aims to create a multimedia archive on the phenomenon of high tide.

The main goal of this initiative is to collect, with your help and through social media, images and experiences about high tide and the impacts on your life.

This, in order to create a digital community memory for the lagoon inhabitants and visitors of today and tomorrow. Your collaboration is very important: we are grateful if you decide to help us in the realization of this project by sending us materials that tell about your experiences on the exepctional high water of November 12-13, 2019.

Help us classify Images

We need your help to organize the archive

The Aquagranda archive will be an all-round collaborative archive: not only to collect images but also to catalogue them in an efficient way. We started this summer asking for contributions from the inhabitants of the city of Venice and we have already received a lot of material, especially photos and videos. These multimedia materials are important but to make them as usable as possible we need to classify them. Classifying these images will allow us to make the archives more functional for whoever will consult it: it will make it easier to search when you want to see a specific materia

For example, if I wanted to search for all photos taken at night, I could do so. The same would be true if I searched for all photos showing boats.

This archive grows as the contribution of those who animate it and decide to dedicate themselves to curating a collective memory for the city, especially for future generations of Venice.

What questions will you need to answer to help us catalog the images?

Below some examples...

  • Where is the scene set?
  • Are there any firefighters?
  • Are there any animals? Which ones?
  • Are there any objects?
  • Which objects?
  • Is it day or night?
  • Do you see any bridges?
  • Where is the scene set? What is the weather like in the picture?
